Planaura: An open geospatial foundation model for Canada
The Canada Centre for Mapping and Earth Observation is pleased to announce the release of Planaura, an open geospatial foundation model designed for Canada. Trained on a decade of satellite imagery, Planaura captures the diversity of Canadian ecosystems—from the Arctic to the coasts—and is time-aware, enabling users to track environmental changes across the years. Planaura can support mapping, environmental monitoring, disaster response, and climate adaptation by serving as either a strong backbone for your specialized models or an unsupervised means of extracting information. It is freely available on GitHub and HuggingFace for government, researchers, industry, and the public.

Canada's Rapid Extreme Weather Event Attribution system
This season, Environment and Climate Change Canada expanded the Rapid Extreme Weather Event Attribution system to better understand the role of climate change in extreme precipitation. It takes about 24 hours after a severe precipitation event stops to get results. Scientists use climate models to compare two different climates: the climate of the 1800s and the climate of today.
